Since May 2008, the ownership of dogs, including potentially dangerous dogs, has been regulated by law.

Law of May 9, 2008, on Dogs That May Be Dangerous

Since May 2008, a law has regulated the ownership of dogs, including those considered potentially dangerous.

The following dog breeds are, by law, considered potentially dangerous in Luxembourg:

  1. a) Staffordshire Bull Terrier dogs;
    b) Mastiff-breed dogs;
    c) American Staffordshire Terriers;
    d) Tosa dogs;
    e) dogs that, based on their physical characteristics, are similar to American Staffordshire Terriers but are not registered in a pedigree registry recognized by the minister responsible for the administration of veterinary services, referred to in this Act as “the minister”; such dogs are commonly known as “pit bulls”;
    f) dogs that, based on their physical characteristics, are similar to Mastiff-type dogs but are not registered in a pedigree registry recognized by the Minister; these dogs are commonly referred to as “boer-bulls”;
    g) Dogs that, based on their physical characteristics, are similar to Tosa dogs but are not registered in a pedigree registry recognized by the minister. A Grand Ducal regulation lists the identifying characteristics of these dogs.

Dogs that have been determined, by a decision of the Director of the Veterinary Services Administration as provided for in Article 9(4), to be dangerous.

(a) The dogs listed here must complete training courses at an accredited dog training school before taking an obedience test.

(b) The owner of a dog on the list must attend the theory classes organized by L.A.K. « Association luxembourgeoise des praticiens petits animaux » www.lak.lu

This course includes: 2 sessions of 6 hours each of theory and costs €250.00.

Classes are held on two consecutive Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

On the second Saturday, there is a multiple-choice exam.
